by Kate Stromberg

Start the December Holiday Festivities with a performance of A Christmas Carol! In Rochester, you have your choice of enjoying the classic play at the Mayowood Stone Barn - or - watching an updated, musical version, “The Christmas Carol Rag” at the Rochester Repertory Theatre.

Is Holiday Inn the Solution to retirement??!!

by Lauren Bellmore

I received a funny email from my fabulous in-laws a few weeks ago regarding nursing homes (see below.) While it gave me a good chuckle, I didn’t think about it too much further. The questions these days of retirement and health care are regularly at the forefront of political debates and the intricacies can sometimes be hard to follow. But I found that these two pieces/articles, one very funny and one quite serious, speak to many of the issues facing not just the older generation, but the younger too. If the older generations don’t retire until well into their 70s and 80s, they are holding valuable jobs that the younger generation could have and therefore are an integral part to slowing down economic recovery, never mind the sociological implications of dependent “children” who are in their mid-30s. On the other hand, the cost of retirement and health care has risen so much, that many people are finding it impossible to retire at earlier ages. Perhaps Holiday Inn is the solution- it would certainly create jobs if more “hotels” were needed to house the elderly!! Read on - here is the link to the article about retiring in your 80s:

http://rismedia.com/2011-11-22/retiring-at-80-vs-retiring-at-25/

And here is the funny piece about Holiday Inn as a cheap alternative to a nursing home:

No nursing home for us. We'll be checking into a Holiday Inn!
With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble.
I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's $59.23 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon. That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies.
Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc.
Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap.
$5 worth of tips a day you'll have the entire staff scrambling to help you.
They treat you like a customer, not a patient.
There's a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free.
The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp).
To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays.
For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up.
It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today.
And you're not stuck in one place forever -- you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii ? They have Holiday Inn there too.
TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem.. They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience.
The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they'll call an ambulance . . . or the undertaker.
If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.
And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grandkids can use the pool.
What more could I ask for?
So, when I reach that golden age, I'll face it with a grin.

I agree. Let the cold keep the riff-raff out!

I love Tracy McCray and her article in the PB this morning made me laugh.  I am also like her where I don't keep up with celebrity gossip, and I really didn't care why after 72 days Kim was getting a divorce. However, I never thought MN would be the reason.  Didn't they discuss where they would be living before they got married?  Another reason why I don't keep up with the silly celeb gab.

This is for those of you who do and even for us who occasionally can't help but participate:

Should I Sell My Home this Winter?

by Beth Nordaune

Many clients are asking, “Should I leave my home on the market over the winter or start over in spring?” Well, it really depends.

Ask yourself these 5 questions to help uncover the answer.

  1.  Is your home priced right?

Are you in line with what the market will bear?  Are you willing to make an adjustment if needed?  If your home is priced over market value and for whatever reason, i.e. financial, pride, or ability to move ahead accept it probably will not sell this winter.  You should consider taking it off the market.  Maybe you will need to stay where you are, save money if you are upside down in your home, or do some easy improvements that may yield that higher price.

  1. Is your home vacant?

    You have two options:

One, take it off the market, turn the heat down and winterize. It will also save utility costs, snow removal, and worry. It is hard when you are away to worry about your investment.  Did someone leave lights on?  Are the doors locked?  Is my home secure?

Two, leave it on and get every bit of market time you can.
Homes do sell in the winter!

  1. Tired?  Maybe you need a break.

Selling your home is stressful.  When I am out showing homes I can see the exhausted seller who just isn’t quite keeping the home in top notch showing condition anymore.  If that sounds like you, maybe you need a break to enjoy your home and the holiday season. Start up again in the spring with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

  1. Are you receiving negative feedback from showings?

Have you had negative feedback on your home’s condition or items that may need repair or updating?  Take advantage of the winter months to spruce up your home and get it in market condition to take away those buyer objections. Also, the holidays are a great time to snag some bargains on the products you need to update your home.

  1. Has your home been on the market for a long time?  Reset the days on market or DOM.

Maybe it is important to you to roll back the clock and arrive on the spring market fresh as a new listing with zero days on market. Some potential buyers look at “old” listings and assume there is something wrong with the property or that the sellers are unwilling to negotiate. In southeast MN our Multiple Listing Service requires that you are off the market 90 days before you can begin again at 0 DOM, as a new listing.

As you can see, sometimes it can be a difficult decision to make on your own.  If you need professional advice contact your REALTOR.  We would also be willing to help you analyze your needs and decide what you should do going forward.

Rochester's Weekly Heartbeat - November 2nd

by Kate Stromberg

This is the week for musicals! As I was perusing the local happenings I stumbled across two great shows this week: SPAMALOT! and “Don’t Hug Me, I’m Pregnant.”

SPAMALOT! is based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail – the famously hilarious British movie. SPAMALOT! is playing ONLY on Wednesday night. Click HERE for tickets and more details.

The other musical I found, “Don’t Hug Me, I’m Pregnant,” sounds absolutely hilarious! The show is playing in Plainview, MN and you should definitely click HERE to read the synopsis and find show times.
