Thank Goodness for Roto Rooter!
A few weeks ago while I was in the shower I heard the toilet in my bathroom bubble (this was in my basement bathroom.) I didn’t think much of it at the time until I looked into my laundry room (where there is a floor drain) and there was standing water on my floor. It wasn’t a ton of water but enough to be concerned about the draining of my pipes to the outside world. At the time I could not deal with it because I was headed out to a family Christmas and I was already running late.
Later on that evening (after the family Christmas) I talked to my dad about what had happened (this has happened once before in the 8 or so years I have lived there) and he said that he would call his buddy up to come out and look at the drain and then snake it out. When I got home that evening the standing water had drained and all was good!
Well I can say that a week went by and everything seemed to be fine, all the water was draining correctly and I felt like I had no worries: maybe it was the weather, it was FREEZING cold and maybe there was frost in my clay pipes. Sadly that was not the case! Last Wednesday night I was doing laundry, guess what…. It happened again! Oops, I totally blame myself and it was my fault that I had not called to get someone over to take care of it! Well this was about 10pm and I was not about to pay beaucoup bucks for this. I decided to wait.
The next morning not all of the water had drained, the toilet in the basement was outta water and my shower had the grossest thing I have ever seen in the drain. Needless to say I called IMMEDIATELY the next morning.
I first started with RPU because I am on the emergency coverage plan, but came to find out they do NOT cover this particular problem… it may only be $1.99 a month extra BUT if they don’t cover this issue then no need to pay right? Ok, so with that small disappointment I called Rochester Plumbing and Heating. They were able to get me an appointment that day, in fact, within a few hours!
Rochester Plumbing and Heating (Roto Rooter) saved the day! They were on time, professional, clean, efficient, and I was even able to ask questions while he worked on the problem! It was not an expensive fix and Jason (the name of the service guy) told me that I could have called the night before and it would not have cost me anything extra!
I have since found out from my neighbors, that have been there for more than 30 years, that there was a large walnut tree that used to be planted in my boulevard. This tree had been taken down before I purchased the home. The roots from this HUMONGOUS (as my neighbors put it) tree are still growing into my pipes and caused this issue.
So the moral of my story is, for those of you that have had this issue in the past, or have tree roots a little too close to your pipes it is probably time to get it checked out by a professional. And for those of you that have not had this problem, if you ever run into it Rochester Plumbing and Heating is the place to call!
