I think it is very interesting to see where a person lives and the type of home they have picked. Obviously, most of us do not live in homes as big or as expensive as these, but regardless, the style of a home and the type of décor is revealing about a person. The line between functionality and aesthetics can be a difficult one to balance. For some cultures, the principals of Feng Shui are of prime importance when both picking and decorating a home. Here are some links explaining the basic notions of Feng Shui, along with an image that overviews the concepts:

The Nordaune Team had an interesting discussion a few days ago about our homes and how some elements of Feng Shui make sense on a practical level: such as the direction your home faces determines the amount of light and/or heat that a home might receive. On an aesthetic level, it also makes sense that certain elements and/or colors would add to the overall atmosphere in a home that in turn can have an impact on your emotions: wood is warm, water is soothing, blue is cold, yellow is energizing etc. Many famous people are known to have hired “feng shui” masters to help them decorate their homes and in some cases, even build their homes/buildings (such as Donald Trump who used Pun-Yin for the Trump tower in NYC- he said of Feng Shui “I don’t have to believe in Feng Shui. I do it because it makes me money.”) In any case, I just find it fun and interesting to think about how we live and express ourselves through our homes. Next time you think about decorating a room or moving furniture around, take some time to think about, not just the functionality of your room, but also, how to make it an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable space to live in every day.
