Rochester is divided into four quadrants: NE-55906, NW-55901, SE-55904, SW-55902
The East-West dividing line is Highway 63/Broadway or more precisely the Zumbro River. The North-South dividing line is Center Street. Streets and avenues are numbered from these dividing lines.
Skyways & Pedestrian Subways: Rochester's downtown skyway and underground walkways give you accessibility to more than 1,700 hotel rooms, Mayo Civic Center, over 3,900 parking spaces, shopping and entertainment... all without going outside. The downtown skyways are open to the public during the following hours: Mon-Thurs: 6am-12am, Fri: 6am -1am, Sat: 8:30am-1am, Sun & Legal Holidays: 8:30am-10pm.
Employment: Rochester is home to many businesses. Mayo Clinic currently employs close to 32,000 people and is continually expanding. IBM is Rochester’s second largest employer with 4,500 jobs. With a multitude of local businesses ranging from restaurants, gift stores, specialty foods and services, there are opportunities for jobs or start-ups to be found everywhere. Not forgetting of course agriculture and agribusiness that accounts for 1/3 rd of the jobs in Olmsted Country
Arts and Entertainment: Rochester has an active Arts and Culture scene and despite the colder winter weather offers ample entertainment year round. With several festivals (RochesterFest, Winterfest to name just a few), a variety of music (both small local bands to our very own Symphony Orchestra), interesting art shows (Rochester Art Center), several theatres (Civic Theatre and Repertory Theatre), dance groups, comedy clubs, restaurants and bars, movie theatres etc. 1st Street becomes home to Thursdays’ on First during the warmer months, morphing into the Winter Village during the winter. With a weekend farmers’ market year round, there really is everything anyone could ever need or want! With the Mayo Clinic in town, there are also several sites of historical interest (Mayowood, Plummer House) as well as the Mayo History Museum and History Center of Olmsted County! Rochester is also home to a baseball team “the Honkers” and an ice hockey team “the Ice Hawks” that offer fun sporting events for all to attend and enjoy!
Parks and Recreation: The City of Rochester has more than 3500 acres of park land and more than 85 miles of paved trails to discover. Rochester is one of only two cities in Minnesota to win the title of “Bicycle Friendly Community.” There are 100+ individual parks with playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, football fields, basketball courts, swimming pools etc. There are also several dog parks for those with four legged friends! In addition to an abundant choice of parks to enjoy, there is also the Recreation Center and the Watson Sports Complex for indoor activities. The Quarry Hill Nature Center serves as an educational focal point for nature and wildlife learning, while 10+ golf courses in and around town cater to leisure and distressing!
General Shopping: Rochester is surprisingly versatile when it comes to shopping. With a good mixture of specialty, boutique and chain stores, there is a large choice for where to shop. There are two SuperWalmarts, SuperTargets on either end of town, several HyVees (grocery store), Cub Food, Sam’s Club and even a Trader Joe’s. Hyvee Barlow also offers home delivery for those of you on tight schedules or not able to get to the store yourselves. Rochester is also home to Apache Mall, a full service shopping mall. There are also the Shops at University Square, the TJ Maxx Plaza and several large furniture stores such as Hom and Ashley Furnishings. And though most of you will probably already know this, Rochester is only a quick drive away to the Mall of America. There is a shuttle service to the Mall from Rochester for $38 same day return
Education: Rochester’s school district 535 consists of 17 elementary schools, 5 middle schools and 3 high schools. The Rochester Independent School District serves 16,300+ students and employs 1,199 teachers. The students have held consistently higher-than-average standardized test scores, as well as a high graduation rate. The district boasts a diverse student body representing 58 countries of origin with 68 different languages spoken. There are four public charter schools in the area catering to a more alternative education: Studio Academy which focuses on visual and performing arts, Rochester Off-Campus Charter High School that serves at-risk students and Rochester Math and Science Academy and the Rochester Arts and Science Academy that both cater to those newly arriving and immigrating to the Rochester area. You will also find a large number of private schools to choose from also, information about which is readily available on the internet. Additionally, there are several higher education institutions offering college level learning: Mayo Foundation, Crossroads College, Rochester Community and Technical College, St Mary’s College Rochester Center, University of Minnesota Rochester, University Center Rochester, Minnesota School of Business, Cardinal Stritch University and Winona State University College Center.
Housing: There are many options available for housing in Rochester. Most people find it very affordable to purchase a home in the area and with a low cost of living overall; it can be a great investment. There are many different types of neighborhoods both old and new that offer a wide variety of styles, comforts and local amenities- there’s something for everyone.
